A freestanding object approximately four feet high sits within the space. Its highly polished walnut base is trimmed with a decorative edge common to ornate furniture. Centered on the base is a mound of dirt that was seemingly pressed into a beveled form. An obviously composed arrangement of moss, grass, and driftwood coats the dirt surface, creating the ideal environment for a taxidermic animal. Where a posed animal would normally reside, however, a common end table is placed. Taking from aspects of “taxidermy theory,” the table is positioned on one corner and leans over its false habitat, implying motion. This is a tactic used in taxidermy to enhance the lifelike appearance of the animal on display.
