Domestic Carnival is an ongoing project that involves altering household rooms and reconstituting them as flashing, motorized amusement park rides. Ultimately, this project will transform an entire family home into a traveling carnival; one room at a time. To begin the series, I have fabricated a sculpture that merges the psychology of the county fair with the intimate and highly personal nature of the dining room. Carnival effects, such as flashing, chasing and pulsing lights; steel scaffolding; and a portable generator, have been combined with a dining room table, chairs, oak hardwood flooring, and objects from within the room. The apparatus is engineered analogous to a carnival ride; the entire sculpture is mounted on a custom trailer that collapses into itself, making it easy to transport to its next destination.
